Bookwork Policy

Rationale

 

At Sylvania Heights P.S. we value a high standard of bookwork.

By developing a consistent set of expectations, students will develop continuity with their bookwork from Kindergarten to Year Six. This will ensure students maintain acceptable standards of neatness and pride in their work.

 

Whole School Expectations

·        All students and parents know the bookwork expectations at Sylvania Heights P.S.

·        All students take pride in their bookwork.

·        There is consistency throughout the school.

 

Student Expectations

1.    No graffiti or scribble, anywhere in books.

2.    Pages are not to be torn out.

3.    Use every page and every line where appropriate.

4.    Write the date at the top of all work. 

5.    Use editing code for mistakes. Do not use white out. Erasers may be used for pencil at discretion of the teacher.

6.    Use lead pencil until issued with a “pen licence”. After that, write in blue pen. Pencil to be used for map work and maths work at the teacher’s discretion.

7.    Felt Pens/Textas are not to be used in books, but may be used on stencils or artwork. Coloured pencils can be used in books.

8.    Margins-

·        Stage 2-rule a 2cm margin in pencil or red pen if you have a pen licence.

·        Stage 3- 1cm margin with header and footer.

9.    Book covers are at the teacher’s discretion but they   

     must be kept neat with no graffiti or scribble on the cover.  

    Textbooks are not to be covered.

10. Print all labels i.e. diagrams, illustrations.

 

Handwriting Style

·        K-2- Foundation style print.

·        Yr 3- Introduce tails into printing

·        Yr 4- Cursive from Semester 2.

·        5-6- Cursive.

 

 

 

Reporting to Parents

Bookwork is part of our accountability to parents and to the education of our students. Please articulate our bookwork policy at parent teacher night. All textbooks, worksheets and exercise books need to be marked regularly with appropriate feedback to students. Student worksheets need to be stored in folders or books. Books will be collected regularly by stage supervisors and bookwork awards given. (See below and staff bulletin for timetable.)

Books will be sent home on a rotational basis, one every five weeks, as shaded below. Parents will be asked to sign and /or comment.

Stage Two Bookwork Expectations

It is expected that all students in Stage 2:

 

1.   Keep all books neat and tidy.

2.   Never graffiti scribble or tear out pages from books.

3.   Put the date at the top of all bookwork.

4.   Use an HB pencil until a pen licence is issued in year 4.

Then use blue pen. Lead pencil in maths books.

5.   Rule a 2cm margin in pencil in all books except maths.

6.   Erasers may be used but no white out.

7.   Book covers: Textbooks do not need to be covered.

Exercise books may be covered. Ask your teacher.

8.   Coloured pencil only, in exercise books.

9.   All worksheets will be stored in folders or books.
